Amur tiger skin confiscated in a store

On September 23, 2004 another tiger skin was confiscated in Primorye, Russian Far East.

On 23 September, Andrei Yurchenko, chief officer of Khasan anti-poaching team of “Inspection Tiger”, brought another poaching “trophy”- an Amur tiger skin. It was confiscated from Konstantin Alikov by the officers of Khasan police during the search in “Vostok” store in Slavyanka city, Khasansky district of Primorye. The skin was not the object of search. The “owner” explained the presence of the skin in his store by forgetfulness – in spring of this year he bought the skin on the Chinese market and understanding that the tiger was a rare animal protected by the government and not wanting the skin to slip into China, he decided to forward it to Inspection Tiger and brought the skin together with his goods to his store. The employees of the store accidentally moved the skin to a place unknown for him. Being a very busy person, Konstantin forgot about the treasure purchased for 6,000 rubles ($200) (with his monthly salary of 5,000 rubles) and remembered about it only when it was revealed by the police officers. According to the current legislation, the guilty was sentenced to a fine of 1,500 rubles ($50), which he paid on spot.

One can put a period here. One can sigh sorrowfully – what are doing those who should protect the tigers? One can be perplexed or gloat over such a small fine. But everything is within our laws. And we do not have others. In the current situation it is very difficult to protect the natural treasure. There is a hope that the time will come when poachers will go to prison. And we shall do everything for it to come true sooner.

The Khasan anti-poaching team of Inspection Tiger is supported by the Phoenix Fund, Tigris Foundation, IFAW and Wildlifeline.
