Dear friends;
Many of you might have been wondering why I am not replying your e-mail. I
suppose you are aware of as what happened in Nepal recently. If not, the
news is that there is no democracy in Nepal since February 1. We are
living under the iron grip of the king. This is infact a military rule
because the king is the head of the army.There are soldiers patrolling
everywhere in the cities.
I was in the hospital for three days because my daughter had severe fever.
In the afternoon of February 1 I knew that the king had declared the state
of emergency around 10 AM Nepal time on that day. Immediately after that
all the telephones along with all the medias including TVs, radios,
Internet, and newspapers were shut down. All the national and
international flights were stopped or diverted.
The situation is such that we really don’t know as what has been happening
in our neiboring districts and all over Nepal as a whole. The reason is
that the radio stations are not allowed to broadcast any news. We can
listen only songs and musics on the radios. The king has allowed the cable
TV operators only to run movies, music, and sports channels such as Indian
movies, Cinemax, MTV, HBO along with BBC and CNN for the last few days.
However, we can’t get much news from the BBC and the CNN about Nepal.
There is no news in the national newspapers either because the newspapers
are published after strict censorship.
The Internet and the telephone is back only today (Feb.9) in Pokhara. What
we hear is that there is not much political unrest going on in Nepal
because most of the political leaders are either arrested or are hiding or
fled to India. The schools, colleges, and businesses are running the
normal way. The international flights along with domestic flights have
also been resumed. I feel that it is a “calm” before a “storm”.
I am in Pokhara right now because my wife is going to deliver a baby soon.
I will be here for about two more weeks. The situation in Nangi area is
okay. The intranet connection to Nangi is working well and I am
communicating with them regularly.

많은 분들이 제가 왜 여러분들의 이메일에 답을 하지 않고 있는지 궁금해 하시리라 생각합니다.
최근의 네팔 사태에 대해 소식을 접하셨으라 생각 되어지는데, 만일 모르셨다면, 2월 1일부터 네팔엔 민주주의가 사라졌다는 사실을 알려드립니다. 우리는 왕의 철권 통치아래 놓여져 있습니다. 사실 왕이 군대의 수장이기 때문에 군의 통제아래 놓여 있는 것과 같습니다. 도시 어디에서나 군인들이 순찰을 돌고 있습니다.
저는 제 딸이 고열을 앓아 삼일동안 병원에 있었습니다. 2월 1일 오후가 되어서야 왕이 그날 네팔시간으로 오전 10시경에 계엄령을 선포했다는 사실을 알게 되었습니다. 계엄령 선포 즉시, T.V, 라디오, 인터넷, 신문등을 포함하는 모든 대중매체의 통신이 끊겼고, 전화도 끊겼습니다. 모든 국내선과 국제선 항공편들이 운행을 중단하거나 회항하였습니다.
상황이 그러해서 우리는 이웃지역이나 네팔 전 지역에서 무슨 일이 벌어졌고, 벌어지고 있는지 잘 알지 못합니다. 라디오 방송국에선 어떤 뉴스도 보도하지 못하도록 통제 받고 있어서 우리는 라디오에선, 단지 노래와 음악만 청취할 수 있습니다. 왕은 지난 며칠동안 케이블 T.V에서 BBC, CNN 채널과 더불어 인도영화들, Cinemax, MTV, HBO와 같은 영화, 음악, 스포츠 채널만은 정상 가동되도록 허용하였습니다.
그렇지만 BBC나 CNN을 통해선 네팔에 대한 소식을 많이 접할 수가 없습니다. 그리고 엄격한 검열을 거쳐 신문이 발행되기 때문에, 국내 신문 지면에선 사태와 관련된 뉴스는 보도되지 않고 있습니다.
포카라에 2월 9일자로 인터넷과 전화가 다시 연결되었습니다. 우리가 듣는 모든 것은 대부분의 정치 지도자들이 체포되거나 숨어있거나 인도로 추방당했기 때문에 정치적 불안이 높지 않다는 것입니다. 모든 학교, 대학과 사업은 정상적으로 돌아가고 있습니다. 국내선과 함께 국제선도 다시 운행되고 있습니다. 저는 이러한 상황들이 “폭풍”전의 “고요”(폭풍전야)라 생각되어집니다.
아내가 곧 출산할 예정이어서 지금 포카라에 있습니다. 약 2주 정도 더 이 곳에 머무를 것입니다. 낭기마을 지역의 상황은 좋습니다. 낭기마을과의 연락은 잘 진행되고 있고 정기적으로 의사소통을 하고 있습니다.
