Dear Supporters from Korea,
I hope you are aware of the political situation in Nepal by now. The king
has taken over all the power and he is ruling directly with the help of
ministers. We can’t say definitely as how the situation will develop in
Nepal in future. I will keep informing the situation in Nepal ocasionally.
Despite the political situation, the schools in the village is running
well. Also the sewing training program is going well too. There is no
fighting in our school area between the Maoists and the army. The Maoists
force us to close the schools whenever they call for strike. Other than
that the situation is normal.
The followings are the brief report of the projects we have done so far.
Right now I don’t have some of the pictures that I wanted to send. I will
send the pictures later after I go to the village.
1. I received the big bag of clothes that you sent from Mr. Kim Hong Sung
at the end of January. I wold like to give a big thanks to Miss. Song
Hyang Ho for getting the clothes. I have already sent the bag of clothes
to Nangi, but we have not distributed the clothes yet to the children. The
reason is that I am in the city now for two weeks with my wife and
daughter. My wife just delivered a daughter a day before yesterday in the
hospital. I will have to take care of my wife for about two weeks. After
that I will go to the village and distribute the clothes to the school
children.
2. We have decided to support to establish a new plant nursery in a
village called Narchyang as part of our nature conservation program. For
the program, we will provide the village $50 per month. There will be one
staff working full time to produce tree sapling in the nursery. The plan
is to produce at least five thousands trees of different kinds in the
nursery and plant them. The work has already started from the middle of
January. At the beginning, we provided them USD 100 to prepare a plot for
the nursery.
Narchyang village is one full day walk to the north of Nangi village. The
villagers had asked for support to start a plant nursery to me. Therefore
I went to the village and discussed with them about the need of nursery. I
found that the natural forest is very far from the village and the
villagers have to spend a full day to collect firewood and fodder.
Therefore they were very interested to grow tree saplings in the nursery
and plant them in the community land and private land. This project will
help to make the barren areas green and ultimately save the natural
forest.
3. We have sent three men from Nangi village in Kathmandu for different
kinds of training. They are taking handmade paper making, handicraft
making and wood carving training in Kathmandu. The training in Kathmandu
is for three months. The training started from January 26. The training
cost for one person is about $80 per person per month including living
costs in Kathmandu. We are using your donation to pay for the training.
Our plan is to start a handicraft making program in Nangi village. After
the three people take the training they will come to the village and give
training to the villagers. We will also produce handicraft in the school
for sale. The income from the handicraft sale will go to support the
school.
4. The sewing training is going well. The women completed their first
round of trianing for three months. Right now they have taken break and
the second round of training will start after one month.
5. We also built a composting toilet near the nursery school for the
children. Until now there was no toilet for the children near the school
building. It costs $258 to build the toilet. We used your donation to
build the toilet.
The idea of building composting toliet came from an American medical
doctor, who volunteered in the village for two month. The human feces is
mixed with the tree leaves that will turn into compost. The compost can be
used in the field by the farmers.
Please let me know if you have any questions regarding the programs. I
will send the pictures of the projects later on because I don’t have them
with me right now.

지금까지 일어난 네팔의 정치적 상황을 알고 계시리라 생각합니다. 왕이 모든 권력을 쥐고 있고 장관들의 도움을 받아 직접 통치하고 있습니다. 우리는 미래 네팔의 상황이 어떻게 흘러가게 될지 명확히 말씀드릴 수가 없습니다. 이따금씩 네팔의 상황을 계속해서 알려드리 도록 하겠습니다.
이런 정치적 상황에도 불구하고 낭기마을의 학교들은 잘 운영되고 있습니다. 재봉훈련 프로그램도 잘 진행되고 있습니다. 우리 학교들 부근에서 마오이스트들과 군 사이의 교전은 없습니다. 마오이스트들은 파업을 요구할 때마다 우리가 학교 문을 닫도록 강요합니다. 그것 이외엔 모든 상황은 순조롭습니다.
다음 아래의 글은 우리가 지금까지 성취한 계획들에 대한 보고서입니다. 제가 보내고 싶었던 몇 장의 사진들이 있는데 지금 당장은 보내드릴 수가 없겠습니다. 마을에 돌아가 나중에 그 사진들을 보내겠습니다.
1. 1월 말에 김홍성님으로부터 옷이 든 큰 가방을 받았습니다. 옷을 마련해주신 송향호님께 진심으로 감사드립니다. 이미 낭기마을에 옷 가방을 보냈지만 아직 아이들에게 나누어주지 않았습니다. 제가 아내와 딸과 함께 2주 동안 도시에 머물고 있기 때문입니다. 제 아내가 그저께 병원에서 딸아이를 출산해서 약 2주 동안 아내를 돌봐야 합니다. 그 이후에 마을로 돌아가서 아이들에게 옷을 나누어줄 예정입니다.
2. 자연보호 프로그램의 일환으로 나르챵(Narchyang)이라는 마을에 새로운 묘목장 건설 비용을 지원키로 결정했습니다. 그 프로그램의 실행을 위해, 우리는 매달 $50을 그 마을에 제공할 예정입니다. 전시간으로 일해줄 직원을 고용할 것인데, 그 직원은 묘목장에 어린 묘목을 생산해낼 것입니다. 묘목장에서 여러 종류의 적어도 5천 그루의 나무들을 생산해내서 그것들을 심을 예정입니다. 1월 중순부터 그 일은 이미 시작되었습니다. 우선 묘목장 부지를 마련토록 그들에게 $100을 주었습니다.
나르챵마을은 낭기마을에서 걸어서 하루가 꼬박 걸리는 거리에 있습니다. 그 마을 주민들이 제게 묘목장 건설 비용을 지원해달라고 요청해서, 저는 그 마을을 방문했고 그들과 함께 묘목장 건설에 필요한 것들을 의논했었습니다. 그 마을에서 자연림이 아주 먼 곳에 떨어져 있고 마을 주민들은 장작과 사료을 모으기 위해 하루를 꼬박 보내야만 한다는 사실을 알게 되었습니다. 그들이 묘목장에서 묘목들을 키워 공유지와 사유지에 심는 일에 관심을 갖게 된 연유는 그러합니다. 이 계획의 실행으로 불모지들이 푸르러질 것이고 궁극적으로는 자연림을 보호할 수 있을 것입니다.
3. 각기 다른 종류의 교육을 위해 세 사람을 카트만두에 보냈습니다. 그들은 각각 수제 종이 제작, 수공예품 제작, 목공예품 제작 교육을 받고 있습니다. 교육과정은 3개월간 정도가 될 것이고 교육은 1월 26일에 시작되었습니다. 개인 당 들어가는 교육비용은 카트만두에서의 생활비를 포함해 한 달에 약 $80 정도가 듭니다. 우리는 여러분들의 기부금을 이 교육비용에 사용하고 있습니다.
낭기에서 수공예품 제작 프로그램을 시작할 예정입니다. 세 사람이 교육을 마치고 마을로 돌아오면 마을 주민들에게 교육을 시작 할 것입니다. 또한 학교에서 판매용 수공예품을 제작할 것이고 수익금은 학교를 지원하는데 사용될 것입니다.
4. 재봉교육은 잘 진행되고 있습니다. 여성들은 3달 동안의 첫 번재 교육을 마쳤고 지금은 휴식을 취하고 있지만 한 달 후에 두 번째 교육에 들어갈 것입니다.
5. 아이들을 위해 탁아소 근처에 퇴비 화장실을 지었습니다. 이것이 지어지기 전까진 학교 주위에 아이들을 위한 화장실 시설이 없었습니다. 화장실을 짓는데 여러분들의 기부금 $258을 사용하였습니다.
퇴비 화장실에 대한 생각은 2달 동안 자원봉사자로 계시는 한 미국인 의사선생님의 생각이었습니다. 인분이 퇴비가 될 나뭇잎들과 섞이는 것입니다. 농부들이 그 퇴비를 밭에서 사용할 것입니다.
