앞으로는 좀더 자주 찾아뵙겠습니다.
지난달 말 일본 도쿄만에서 처음으로 목격되어 고래전문 학자는 물론 고래에 관심을 가지는 모든 사람들의 관심과 이목을 집중시켰던 어린귀신고래 한마리가 지난 5월 11일 일본 토미야마 해상 1.5km 지점에서 그물에 걸려 죽은채 한 어부에 의해 발견되었다고 일본 수산업 관리가 발표했다. 참으로 안타까운 소식이 아닐수 없다.
사실 처음 토쿄만에서 귀신고래가 발견되었다는 소식을 접했을 때 안타까움과 반가움이 교차했었다.
아~ 역시 내가 추측했던대로 오오츠크 귀신고래의 회유로가 일본열도 동쪽이었구나, 그렇다면 동해에서 귀신고래를 보는 일은 더욱 가능성이 희박해진다는 안타까움 이었고, 그래도 한가지 희망적인 것은 귀신고래의 회유로와 번식지역을 알게되면 귀신고래 보호와 개체수 회복에 전기를 마련할 수도 있지나 않을까 하는 희망적인 바램이었다.
이번에 발견된 귀신고래는 체장이 7.9m 인 어린고래였다. 갓태어난 개체의 체장이 4.7 – 5m 정도인 점을 감안하면 올해 태어난 어린개체일 가능성이 높다. 무리에서 이탈하여 길을 읽고 헤메다 결국 그물에 걸려 질식한 이 어린고래를 포함한 귀신고래 무리는 아마도 번식활동을 마치고 목적지 오오츠크 해를 향해 일본 동부해안을 따라 북상중이었을 것으로 추측된다.
모두가 다 알다시피 한국계 귀신고래는 현재 최저 70에서 최대 200 두로 평가되는 대형고래 중에서 가장 심각한 멸종위기에 직면한 고래로 근친관계에 의한 자연 멸종이 우려되는 종이다.
그리고 오오츠크 해역에서 발견된 귀신고래의 하절기 번식지역이 어디인 ?
또 회유로가 어디인지 연구가 진행 중이었다.
일본에서 이번 일로 미루어 현재 생존하고 있는 오오츠크 귀신고래의 하절기 번식지는 동중국해가 가장 유력한 것으로 보는 조심스런 견해가 있었다.

TOKYO: An endangered baby whale that brought joy to hundreds of people after straying into Tokyo Bay was found dead yesterday, tangled in fishing nets, an official said.
The young gray whale was first spotted shortly before Japan’s holidays last week, drawing large crowds with local TV networks carrying live coverage on the animal’s rare appearance in the crowded metropolitan bay.
“It is very unusual for a gray whale to pop up in Tokyo Bay. The whale must have strayed from its group,” an official at the fisheries agency said, adding there were only 100 to 200 gray whales left around Japan.
But the 8m long whale was found dead early yesterday inside fishing nets set in waters off Chiba, 50km east of Tokyo.
“Fishermen discovered the body, which was trapped in fishing nets. As a whale needs to breathe above the water, this gray whale may have been choked to death,” he said.
The gray whale is mostly found off China and California. In the US, decades of conservation efforts have been so successful that the gray whale was taken off the US endangered list in 1993.
The Japanese do not eat gray whales but their hunts of other species of whale have outraged environmentalists who believe the animals’ population is declining and that the hunt is cruel.
International whaling was banned in 1982 but Japan five years later seized a loophole to kill minke whales for what it calls research. The estimated 2,000 tonnes of whale meat from each year’s cull ends up in supermarkets and restaurants.
Japan argues that research shows that whale populations are thriving and provides data showing whales are consuming valuable fish stocks – points disputed by environmentalists.
Japan also says whale is a traditional part of the Japanese diet and has accused environmentalists of disrespecting its culture.

Tokyo Bay’s gray whale found dead in fishing net
CHIBA — A gray whale that had called Tokyo Bay home since mid-April was found dead in a fishing net off Chiba Prefecture on Wednesday, officials said.

The dead whale is placed on a boat ramp in Tomiyama, Chiba Prefecture.
Chiba Prefecture officials believe that the 7.9-meter-long gray whale found off Tomiyama on Wednesday is the one that had been cruising around the Tokyo Bay area from April.
“It is likely that the dead whale is the one that came to Tokyo Bay in mid-April,” said a Chiba Prefectural Government official.
Fishing officials from the prefectural government will visit Tomiyama and inspect the whale, which has been placed on a boat ramp at a local port.
The gray whale spotted off Sodegaura, Chiba Prefecture, and other areas around Tokyo Bay had barnacles on its body. The whale found trapped off Tomiyama also has barnacles. (Mainichi Shimbun, Japan, May 11, 2005)
