HEADLINE: Russian border guards find tiger cub whose mother was strangled by Chinese
Vladivostok, 19 November: Border guards who are performing service at the Maritime section of the Russian-Chinese border handed an orphaned tiger cub to the “Tiger” nature-protection inspectorate today.
The press centre of the Maritime border directorate of the Russian FSB Federal Security Service told RIA that on Thursday 18 November the border guards from the Shkolnaya outpost of the Posyetskiy detachment found a dead tigress in a choke loop and a living cub near it.
The loop was planted by Chinese poachers who illegally crossed the border with a view to poach in the Ussuriyskaya taiga coniferous forests .
Since the helpless tiger cub is so far incapable of surviving in the taiga, it will most likely to be transferred to a wild animals nursery.
On the same day the border guards found six more loops planted by Chinese poachers in the taiga. They are hunting Amur tiger that has been entered in the International Red Book.
The hide of the Amur tiger is highly valued in China’s black market. The tiger’s bones, gall and internal organs are valuable raw materials for preparing oriental medicines.
According to the latest recording, over 400 species of Amur tiger are currently living in the south of Russia’s Far East.
