600 Peace advocates to tour ex-US bases
Olongapo City – Some 600 Japanese and Korean peace advocates are scheduled to arrives here today (Friday, Dec. 22) for a historical and environmental tour of the Subic BayFreeport Zone, a former American naval base.
The Alliance for Bases Clean-up (ABC), composed of two provincial organization of military toxic victims from Clark and Subic, will spearhead the study tour that will tackle the Philippine bases movement’s contribution to world peace during its successful drive to close down the bases in 1991.
“We are excited with the prospect of deepening the people-to-people exchange between the Japanese, Koreans and Filipinos when the Peace and Green boat docks at the Subic Freeport Zone,” Myrla Baldonado, ABC President said.
The Peace and Green boat, carrying the foreign advocates, is expected to arrive Friday morning for whole-day activities to be held here and inside the Subic Bay Freeport Zone.
As part of the tour, the foreign advocates will participate in a forum with ABC officers and members to share information on the impact of the toxic legacy of US bases on the health, environment and bases conversion, Baldonado said.
“To many, especially the former base workers of what was once the Subic Naval Base, it is interesting to hear about he Peace and Green boat coming not to make war but to promote peace,” she said. Allan Macatuno, Inquirer Central Luzon
